3 & 4 umpire system mechanics

updated February 20 2006

We have adopted the ISF mechanics and 3 & 4 umpire systems.  Here are two documents that have the general principles of the new Softball Canada (ISF) 3 and 4 umpire systems.

3 umpire mechanics

4 umpire mechanics

These principles will be in the Level III and Level IV manuals along with more detailed descriptions of coverage.

One area of mechanic change is for the plate umpires.  In slo-pitch, we will now teach the plate umpire to work the inside slot.  In both fast pitch and slo-pitch we will teach the plate umpire to square to the plate, not to the pitcher.

Also in slo-pitch, we will teach that the 3 base umpire in the 3 umpire system should start at 3rd base with no runners on.

We know that change takes time so in recognition of that the ODC has adopted the attached flexible approach.  Again, while we will only be teaching the new Softball Canada (ISF) mechanics and positioning, we will allow a couple of alternate mechanics or positions as set out in this document.

I thank you for your patience, cooperation and understanding as we make the transition.
