The “Goalie” style mask is an acceptable piece of
equipment for umpires to wear. Some Canadian Championship U.I.C.s this past
season did not like the umpires wearing them and expressed displeasure to the
point of not allowing them. It should be noted that if this style of mask is to
be worn by an umpire it must be easily removed and the same procedures and
mechanics will be followed on hit balls, between innings, and when approached by
a coach as if you were wearing a conventional mask. A hat is not worn under the
“goalie” style mask. If you get a chance to try this style of mask, go for it.
They can be a little warm on a hot day, but the peripheral vision is
exceptional.
Canadian Championship U.I.C.s are also being
reminded that white on shoes is not acceptable. It is very
difficult to buy base or slo-pitch shoes from a regular sports shoe
store that does not have white stripes or a white/coloured logo as part
of the shoe design. That white logo or stripe(s) must be either
removed or blackened out.
